Gray Breasted Jay by Debra Tritt Kreiger

6.5x9.5 watercolor on crescent board

We recently took a tip to Sedona, AZ. While hiking the red rocks I happened to photograph this western Jay, which in doing my research have concluded it is a Gray Breasted Jay. Armed with a lot of references I created this painting with the rocky earth colors as the background. I would say he/she is a beauty! Very grateful for the opportunity to see some of the western birds. More to come!

"A Rare Moment" by Debra Tritt-Kreiger

8.5"x11 watercolor on Arches Paper

As I have begun painting more paintings of all the different birds I have encountered and photographed, I found that this was indeed a rare find. I encountered this bird on a beach in New Jersey. In my research I believe it is a Bristle-Thighed Curlew which is in the sandpiper family and their numbers are decreasing due to climate change and the loss of habitat. Really happy to bring this bird into my painting world and help people realize we all share one planet and we need to take care of it.

"Hanging On"By Debra Tritt Kreiger

Hanging On 3.5x5 watercolor on 140lb paper

This is a sweet little painting I did of  tiny sparrow hanging out on a rather windy day among the cattails! I had to really look for him because he blends right into the background. I believe this little bird is called a chipping sparrow. He has a wonderful song to sing.

"American Goldfinch" By Debra Tritt Kreiger

"American Goldfinch" 7.5"x10" watercolor on Arches 140lb paper

I've been working on this painting for a little while. The challenge I had was placing this beautiful goldfinch in a pleasing and exciting background. I take my own photo reference pictures so I'm learning to look for interesting places to incorporate the wonderful creatures I encounter. I worked on giving the background some nice texture and color to provide harmony and interest to the painting. The sunflowers are great since I wanted to show him with a seed! Turned out to be a bright and cheery painting! Hope you like it!

"The Last Snow" By Debra Tritt Kreiger

"The Last Snow" Watercolor 7.5"x5" on Rough Paper

I thought this would be a nice goodbye snow and welcome spring painting. I had set up a feeding station where I could watch and photograph birds all winter. My objective was to use the birds placing them in different positions around this beautiful red dish of food. The rough paper was a challenge but made for a more interesting background.
